Leanne Lucas is a teacher, children’s yoga instructor, and founder of Let’s Be Blunt CIC, a growing initiative focused on prevention, awareness, and practical conversations around safety in everyday life.
Her work today is shaped by lived experience, including a serious incident in Southport in 2024. That experience became a turning point, and over time it led to the creation of Let’s Be Blunt. The aim is simple, to focus on prevention, awareness, and reducing harm through practical, early conversations rather than reaction after the fact.
Let’s Be Blunt and why kitchen knives are central to the message
At the heart of Let’s Be Blunt CIC is a clear focus on kitchen knives and everyday safety.
The campaign highlights an important and often overlooked statistic. In the UK, around 42% of deaths involving a sharp instrument involve a kitchen knife. This is a key reason why Leanne’s work focuses on prevention in everyday settings rather than looking at violence as something distant or abstract.
The idea behind Let’s Be Blunt is not to alarm people, but to encourage practical thinking about design and environment. One of the discussions the campaign raises is whether small changes, such as reducing the sharpness or design of commonly used kitchen knives, could help reduce the severity of harm in critical moments.
It is a prevention-led approach grounded in the belief that many risks exist in ordinary spaces, and that small, considered changes can make a difference over time. The campaign continues to develop through conversations, awareness work, and engagement with communities and professionals.
Recognition across the region and beyond
Alongside her work with Let’s Be Blunt, Leanne has recently received a number of notable acknowledgements.
She has been named a finalist for the Merseyside Woman of the Year Awards 2026, recognising women across the region who are making meaningful contributions in their fields and communities.
She was also invited to attend a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, an event hosted in recognition of individuals who have shown service, courage, or contribution to their communities.
Taken together, these moments reflect growing recognition of her work and the impact of her ongoing commitment to prevention and community awareness.
A growing role within We Are PoWEr
Leanne first joined the community by recording the We Are PoWEr Podcast for a conversation that explores her background, her work in education and wellbeing, and the thinking behind Let’s Be Blunt.
The episode gives space to her story in a way that feels open and grounded. It is not focused on headlines, but on understanding how experience can shape purpose and direction over time.
Since then, her involvement with the wider We Are PoWEr community has continued to grow.
She attended the 2026 NPW Awards, where she also presented an award on stage, standing alongside other women being recognised for leadership, impact, and contribution across the North West.
Beyond formal events, she has begun building connections within the network, working alongside individuals and organisations focused on community-based change.
Why her story is resonating
Leanne’s story continues to resonate because it sits in a space many people connect with. It is about how experience can be channelled into something constructive.
Let’s Be Blunt reflects that approach. It is not built around a single moment, but around ongoing work that aims to raise awareness and encourage practical thinking about safety in everyday environments.
